Vuoden alussa pöllöreviiri määrät rikkoivat vanhoja ennätyksiä tuhka tiheään. Tiedossa kuitenkin oli että myyräkannat tulevat romahtamaan jossain vaiheessa. Epäselvää oli vain, että osuuko romahdus haudonta ajalle, pesäpoikasten aikaan vai vasta maastopoikasten aikaan. Hieman alueellista vaihtelua aina myyräkannoissa on, mutta meilläpäin huonot ajat osuivat kohtuu aikaiseen vaiheeseen. Vaikka lapinpöllöjä vuoden alussa oli äänessä useita, niin pesintöjä aloitettiin tosi nihkeästi. Joten ehkä ruokakantojen väheneminen on onnistuttu siellä täällä jo näkemään aiemmin… tai sitten osa lapinpöllöistä ovat vaan olleet optimistisempia ruuan riittävyyden suhteen.
Tällä tutulla reviirillä pesintä kuitenkin aloitettiin. Ja kuten jo vuoden alussa kävin kuuntelemassa, niin myös pesäpaikkaa oli vaihdettu… mikälie ettei viime vuotinen risupesä ollut kelvannut. Olisivatko ajatelleet rengastajaa kun tämän vuotinen pesä oli aika paljon korkeammalla kuin viime vuotinen, vaikkei viime vuotinenkaan pesä missään nimessä matalalla ollut. Tänä vuonna pesässä oli alunperin kolme poikasta, joista loppujen lopuksi vain yksi selviytyi maastoon saakka. Maastopoikanenkin oli normaalia maastopoikasta pienempi… tietäjät sanovatkin että huono ruokatilanne voi aikaistaa poikasten pesästä lähtöä.
Kun kävin tilannetta katsastamassa niin poikanen oli vasta jättänyt pesän ja oli vielä aika matalalla… onnistuinkin omasta mielestäni saamaan aika kivan kuvan kepin päällä istuvasta poikasesta. Emo oli myös paikalla, muttei käyttäytynyt aggressiivisesti minua kohtaan. Suomen pöllöt kirjasta muistaakseni joskus lueskelin että ruuan määrä ja sitä myötä poikasten selviämis mahdollisuudet vaikuttavat suoraan myös emojen aggressiivisuuteen tunkeilijoita kohtaan… Eli mikä kannattaa ja mikä ei jos poikasen tulevaisuuden näkymät eivät ole kovinkaan hyvät.
Pari iltaa myöhemmin kävin jonkun kerran illalla kuuntelemassa ja kiertelemässä alueella, mutta edes äänihavaintoa ei poikasesta enää kuulunut. Todennäköisesti huonot myyräkannat korjasivat viimeisenkin poikasen pesueesta paremmille myyrämaille. Näin romahduksen jälkeen, ensi vuosi tulee olemaan ainakin meilläpäin hiljainen, mutta siitä ne ajat alkavat taas paranemaan pöllöjen näkökannasta katsottuna kun myyräkannat alkavat taas tekemään nousuaan.

In the beginning of the year, the numbers of owl territories braked records week after week. Everyone who had followed the numbers and past years, knew that the vole masses will crash at this year. Though no-one didn't knew when the crash will happen... in hatching period, when nestlings are at nest or when nestlings are abandoned their nest. There are of course territorial variation in vole mass crash, but in our territory the crash became quite early. There were many Great grey owl territories in the beginning of the year, but only few started the nesting.
This formerly known territory started nesting, though the nesting place changed compared to last year. I managed to hear territory scream one time in the beginning of the year, and in that time the scream became in different direction where the old nest was, so I guessed that the nesting place may change. In the beginning of the nesting, there were three nestlings at the nest, but when the nest abandoning time became, only one nestling was alive. Sole survivor were also little smaller than nestlings are normally when they abandon their nest. Wise men tell's that when there are not much voles, the nestlings abandon their nest sooner... so it might be the reason for the size of the nestling.
When I went to check the situation in the territory, the nestling was just abandoned his nest and was still quite low in the ground. I managed to get quite nice photo from it. Nestling was not alone, the adult owl was with him. Adult great grey owl wasn't aggressive at all... Wise men also says that if there are not much food, and the surviving posibilities of the nestlings are uncertain, it affects the aggressiveness of the adult owls.
Couple days after the photo, I went to listen, if I could hear the noises of the nestling... I heard nothing. In the next evening I did a little search and also found or heard nothing. I believe that the bad vole numbers were also fatal to the sole survivor.
After this years vole crash, the next year will be quite silent owl year, but little by little the vole masses will grow up and the nesting of the owls will also rise again.
